Why Use Transition Words?

When we write it is important that we connect our thoughts and details so that our writing demonstrates our mastery of organization. In order to connect our thoughts and details it is important that we use words and phrases-normally referred to as transitions-to help our readers understand how one idea is directly linked to another idea in our writing.

Refer to the list below for examples of transition words/phrases that you can use within your own writing. Be sure to select the appropriate transition word/phrase based upon the context of your writing.

To compare or contrast: similarily, but, however, conversely, even so, otherwise, even though, on the other hand, in the same way

To show time: first, second, third, next, later, then, afterward, soon, after a while, in the meantime

To conclude or summarize: finally, to sum up, to clarify, as a result, in short, in summary, in conclusion, for all of these reasons, as it has been proven

To add information: besides, in addition, for example, furthermore, equally important

To show opposing ideas: even though, while, although, in spite of the fact that, on the other hand, in contrast, although this may be true, at the same time, be that as it may
