The Traits of Writing
1. Ideas: the content of the piece
-select and idea (can be either assigned by the teacher or selected by the student)
-narrow down the idea (establish a focus)
-elaborate on the idea (development of your writing)
-uncover the information that will best convey the main idea of your writing (Show Don't Tell-use specific details)
2. Organization: the internal structure of a piece
-start with a lead that will hook your reader (introduction)
-develop the "meat" of your paper while staying organized and establishing clear links between details (body)
-finish making a statement (closing)
3. Voice: this is the heart and soul of the writing and when your reader
knows that it is you speaking
4. Word Choice: the beautiful, rich, and colorful language that a
writer uses to enlighten their readers
5. Sentence Fluency: sentences are well constructed and both varied in
structure and length and the writing is graceful, varied, and
rhythmic
6. Conventions: this is when we edit and prepare the text for
the reader
